How to measure foot length:
  • Stand with your heel up against a wall and place a tape-measure under your feet.
  • Check your longest toe to your heel on the foot length measured in millimeters.
  • When your size is between two sizes, choose the smallest size because Birkenstock usually fits slightly larger.
Explanation width :

Choose the correct fit by reading the instructions below:

normal

The coloured symbol indicates that the footbed is made for the normal foot. When you wear shoes that are made for normal feet, this is the right width for you.

This is the normal width in the Netherlands.
Birkenstock Germany calls this symbol schmall/stretta

wide

The non-coloured symbol indicates that the footbed is made for the broad foot. When you wear shoes that are made for broad feet, this is the right width for you.

This is the wide width in the Netherlands.
Birkenstock Germany calls this symbol normal

A large amount of product is available in two widths; make sure you select the right width. You can find the image on the inner sole of your Birkenstock sandal.

Beware: On the box you will find the German widths. The feet of Dutch people tend to be somewhat smaller than those of Germans. This is the reason that the coloured symbol is indicated as ‘normal’ in the Netherlands. On the box you will find the indication ‘schmall’ because this is the German size.

Size chart

Below we give a simple explanation of what width you can order best. The average Dutch feet width size is more narrow than the of the Germans feet, so therefore we have changed the Birkenstock width size to the Dutch feet.

For all flipflops from size 35:
With the flipflops (thong slippers) the open footprint is 'normal'. (normal to wide)
This size suits the best with normale width feet.
With the flipflops (thong slippers) the black footprint is 'narrow'. (narrow to normal)
This size suits the best with narrow width feet

With thong models the open foot stands for normal.

(except for model Yara)

For all the other products like sandals, slippers, shoes, mules, and clogs please take a note:
For all Birkenstocks with the black footprint is means 'normal'.
This width suits the normal width feet.

(The shoebox have a note of narrow because this contains the German size)
For all the other Birkenstock models the open foortping means 'wide'.
This size suits for the more wide feet.
(At the shoebox that you will receive will be width size normal because this contains                   the German width size)

We advice to choose with all the slippers, sandals, mules, loafers, clogs and shoes for the black feet, which means the normal width where 'normal' after the size number is meantioned.

Are you aware of that you have wide feet? Than please choose for the open, white feet. This is the wide version for the slippers, sandals, mules, loafers, clogs and shoes.

Do you already have Birkenstocks?
Than have a look on the insole of the slipper. Just before the size, for example 40 is the image of a footprint, just like you see up here. This is the only way to check what size width your Birkenstocks are.

This is how you can check the size for your Birkenstocks

If you're buying your first Birkenstock, we advise you to fit in the store. If this is not an option for you, you can use our size help. Just as important as selecting the right width is the choice of correct length, because the choice of the right length and width also increases the life of your BIRKENSTOCK® sandals. Your toes need flexibility to move freely when walking. Therefore, there needs to be fit in the light of sufficient space between the foot and the edge of the footbed. Tip: only try on BIRKENSTOCK® while standing! You will find that your feet need more space when it has to carry the body weight. You must have a few millimeters of space at the heel and the toes. Toes and heel must never touch the edge of the footbed.

Size:
If you doubt between two sizes, we always recommand to choose the smallest. Useually Birkenstocks fits slightly bigger than normal shoes. Have a good look at the mm sizes, because this is the correct way to find the best fitting size.
